Rowley Medico-Legal Services Limited

Neuropsychology Expert Witness Service

Our Mission

Rowley Medico-Legal Services (RMLS) was founded to meet the need for independent, scientifically robust and clearly reasoned neuropsychological expert evidence in adult traumatic brain injury claims, in addition to neurological insult or injury secondary to alleged clinical negligence. We are instructed by claimant and defendant solicitors and insurers, and on a joint basis, in personal injury and clinical negligence litigation.

Our reports are prepared under Part 35 of the Civil Procedure Rules, and our overriding duty is to the court.

We provide expert witness services across the UK, with assessments conducted in person: in clinic or at domiciliary visits.

Our Philosophy

Our approach to expert neuropsychological evidence is based on three principles.

  • Independence. The opinion given is the same regardless of the instructing party and is reasoned from the evidence rather than argued from a position.
  • Thoroughness. The reliability of an opinion on brain injury depends on the review of records, the quality of the clinical interview and the statistical rigour of the testing on which it is based.
  • Clarity. Reports are written so that they can be followed by solicitors, barristers, judges and claimants.

Our reports include a formulation that integrates the records, history, test results and collateral accounts into a single account of the claimant’s presentation and its implications. Each conclusion can be traced to the supporting evidence.

Our Commitment

We provide expert evidence to all parties and to the Court in accordance with the following standards:

  • Opinions are based on the best available scientific evidence, a complete review of the disclosed records, a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, and clinical expertise in brain injury and illness and neurorehabilitation.
  • The duty is to the Court. The same opinion is given whether instructions are received from the claimant, the defendant or jointly. Where the evidence does not support a confident view, this is stated clearly.
  • Communication is prompt, direct and free of unnecessary jargon.
  • Realistic timescales are agreed at the point of instruction and adhered to.
  • Professional and ethical standards of independence, confidentiality and candour are maintained at all times, in accordance with the HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics and the British Psychological Society’s guidance on psychologists as expert witnesses.
  • The evidence of other experts is considered constructively. Joint statements are approached as an attempt to narrow the issues for the Court.
